As part of the cultural shift promoted since 2021 under the +Safety strategic program, Antofagasta Terminal Internacional (ATI) is implementing the "Rules for Life" program within the organization.

Consisting of twelve principles designed to prevent serious or fatal accidents, the program was based on the most severe accidents that occurred in the last three years in ATI and other port terminals.

"The goal of this cultural shift we are promoting at ATI is that all our workers return home safe and sound at the end of each day. An essential feature of this proactive safety culture is to perform the task well, respect the procedures, evaluate the risks, and apply all available safety tools," says Juan Pablo Santibáñez, General Manager of the terminal.

To make the most of this new approach, intensive communication efforts have been carried out with the different work shifts to share across the entire workforce the scope, meaning, origin, and purpose of the rules, as well as how they look in practice.

"The greatest wealth of this process has been sharing experiences with workers and getting to know their views on safety up close. As a result, we have found that they are aware of the inherent risks of their work and interaction with heavy equipment, which has fostered a receptive and positive attitude towards adhering to these principles," says the executive.

To date, more than 66% of the staff have participated in the "Conversations to Adhere to the Rules for Life". Additionally, this workshop will also be shared with suppliers, contractors, transporters, and ultimately everyone who works at and passes through port facilities.

According to the opinions and testimonies gathered from those involved in the conversations, implementation of not only the Rules for Life program but also of this new proactive safety culture has been well received.
