Antofagasta Terminal Internacional (ATI) launched a new cleaning system using drones, which will update and complement the terminal's regular cleaning work. It is the first port terminal in Chile to have this technology.
"The drones will clean the exterior of the Concentrate Receiving, Acceptance and Shipping System (RAEC), the Gottwald and Liebherr cranes and will help us improve our processes, replacing a pressure washer and Manlift equipment with this more efficient, safer alternative for our employees. As a terminal, we are committed to more sustainable actions," explained general manager Juan Pablo Santibáñez.
The new technology, specially designed to clean structures over 50 meters tall, operates from a remote, autonomous station and is controlled on the ground. The maneuvers, which were authorized by the DGAC, use demineralized water to make the cleaning process more efficient.
From an environmental point of view, water use is reduced by 65%. The washing process uses adjustable, room temperature water. After use, the water goes through an osmosis process and is then stored in containers to be sent for final disposal, according to ATI's internal protocols and procedures.
