In order to raise awareness in the school community about protecting the coastal marine area, Antofagasta Terminal Internacional (ATI) has joined forces with the Desierto Azul Foundation to offer lectures on cetaceans and a workshop on benthic organisms to school children at the Sea Education Center (Centro Educativo del Mar) in Llacolén beach.
ATI's general manager, Juan Pablo Santibáñez, noted that "these activities, which are also inclusive, are part of our company's sustainability strategy and focus on protecting and highlighting the value of the coastal zone and its ecosystems. They impart pro-environment values and behaviors so the children themselves learn important ecological aspects in the field before summer starts."
The talks began at the Padre Alberto Hurtado Ecological School, where second graders had an opportunity to learn about coastal marine fauna and the main precautions to take when visiting the coast. The Best Buddies Chile Foundation and visitors from BeGreen2023 of the Geniale Group also joined in, with a day-long activity to observe urban fauna, open to the community, to contribute to the preservation of native fauna and biodiversity.
"It is important for children to not lose connection with nature. Participating in these activities is consistent with what our ecological school teaches, so they can contribute more to caring for the environment," said a teacher at the school, Geraldine Nievas.
Marisol Sapiain, a parent from the school, added, "It is a wonderful experience for the students. This way, they are educated in a special way and learn to appreciate what we have in this city, like knowing that there are dolphins on our coast. I appreciate this opportunity because the children learn much more about how to take care of the environment and how garbage impacts the sea."
"Through our Sea Education Center, we teach environmental education because we believe that we can bring about a cultural shift in children so that they can take better care of our environment and biodiversity, especially our coastal zone and its fauna. We value the participation of the schools that have joined this program," said Maritza Malebrán, educator and marine ecologist at the center.
